Trigger Warnings : police brutality, racism, violence and abusive relationships, mention of drug abuse.

You have no idea how hard it is for me to gather my thoughts about this book and write a review about it. I’ve read it five days ago and I still don’t know how to say what I have to say about this book.

First of all, I want to thank everyone who joined the buddy-read for this book, all of you kept me motivated to read the book. I don’t know if I could have done it without you because I’ve hesitated for a year due to my huge expectations and the fear that they might not be met. But this book – this book absolutely delivered.

I love Starr with all my heart, I love everything she stands for, I love how brave she was through this book, she has become one of my favourite characters without a doubt.

I loved how this book didn’t play around, it was raw and powerful from the beginning, presenting how racism impacts black people in the worst kind of ways. I think the conversations between Starr and her father were very insightful, as they didn’t speak only about racism, but also about how white supremacy continues to exist. Those conversations really destroyed some of the most used excuses on racism and hate crimes.

Starr’s family was the best!!! Their familial dynamics was so much fun, but also so meaningful. Her parents were so protective and supportive, that was some hella great parenting. I wish more authors wrote parents like Angie Thomas does.

I lived for all the Harry Potter references and also for Starr’s grandmother, who was absolutely amusing. I aspire to have one-liners as good as hers, at some point in my life.

I think The Hate U Give shows us a lot about what it means to stick together, what it means to stop being silent in moments of crisis. Starr’s journey was absolutely inspirational and I think everyone should read THUG, it’s a great book that shows us many of the issues humanity faces – it teaches us tolerance, it shows us how world is never fair, especially not to minorities, it shows us how to use our voices to raise ourselves, but most of all, to raise those who are in need and I think that’s what we all need to learn.

I’ll keep this review short because I have too many emotions. Just please read the book if you haven’t already because you’re missing out on a great twirl of emotions and raw experiences and you will surely learn a lot from this book.

We, white people, need to do better and surely this book shows us where we can start.

I know there is a film coming out for this eventually but I am hopeful so many young (and older) people get to read this and absorb the lessons in there, because we all have a chance to do something to challenge what is a persistent and damaging prejudice

Thank you very much!!! I feel like I couldn’t make justice to this book no matter how much I tried. 😦 But read it, it’s perfect and very important!

I feel bad about not having read this yet! I’ve heard the best things, and this is another glowing review to remind me that I need to read this soon. 😭 It’s an intimidating read for me as well, but hopefully I can push through like you did! ❤️

I felt so bad about not having read it before I finally did – it was the best decision ever because THUG is so powerful and will make you aware of so many things that you might not know about racism, our society and so on. YES, it was very intimidating for me because everyone loves it and the subject is so important! Thank you! ❤

Ahh I still have yet to read this book, but I heard amazing things about the story and Starr’s family! I just feel like this is a kind of book that I have to read while in the right mood for me to appreciate its power, and I’ve been waiting for the right time when the mood is here 🙂

Yes, definitely agree with you, Tasya! ❤ I've waited for a while too exactly for this reason! But I feel like this book will get into that mood from the first few sentences no matter what you're feeling before starting to read it. It's that powerful!

This book was so amazing and powerful AND EVERYONE SHOULD READ IT. I thought I knew a fair bit about racism in America but this book showed so much more!! Also it’s weird reading about people owning guns and stuff. I could never even imagine how it might feel to know a policeman owns a gun and can kill you. That’s scary.
There’s also so many ignorat people in our country that I WISH I COULD JUST SLAM THIS BOOK IN THEIR FACES. READ THESE WONDERFUL WORDS WRITTEN BY AN AMAZING BLACK WOMAN PLEASE.

(And I’m so happy you came up with the idea for the buddy read!! I had so much fun!!)

Right? I thought I knew some things about racism in America, but it’s way worse than anything I imagined! It’s awful because these people who are supposed to protect them would kill them for absolutely no reason, but the fact that they are black instead of white and their stupid biases. It’s awful and I can’t imagine how hard it must be :-/
I feel like everybody would benefit from reading this book because it surely makes you more aware of what we are capable of. 😦
(YAAY, I’m so haaaappy. I’m sorry that I wasn’t more active, I was having a bad week, sadly. But I’m glad you had fun!)

The Hate U Give is such an important book, but also so difficult to review because what do you say? It has so much depth to it and you can’t just sum it up in a couple paragraphs either. However, you did an amazing job at pointing out all its strengths. I am living for good parents in YA and The Hate U Give more than delivered here. I am so happy that many kids get to read this in schools and see that their stories matter. Also, me being me, I CANNOT WAIT FOR THE MOVIE!

Thank you, Kat! ❤ It really was hard to sum up everything I liked about THUG, it is just such a good book, you don't know what things to point out first since everything is so IMPORTANT. Yes, I'm so happy that they get to read this book in school, it should be a required read, in my opinion!!! I CAN'T WAIT EITHER AND I'M SO HAPPY WITH ALL THEIR DECISIONS (ESPECIALLY THE LAST ONE). They are amazing.

This was such a great review, Marta, I think you did amazing here 🙂 it’s so hard to review books we love and want everyone to read… we just want to say “GO READ THIS BOOK, you won’t regret it”, that’s all, hahaha 🙂
I really was scared of all the hype surrounding that book as well, but I ended up loving it, too. It was brilliant and well needed, too. I can’t wait to read whateve Angie Thomas writes next! 🙂
    Lovely review once again ❤

Thank you so much, Marie!!! You also help me feel better about everything, you’re the greatest! ❤ Indeed, if it wouldn't have been weird, I would have repeated the words Read the book for a hundred times and be done, muhahahaha.
Me too, the cover for her next book looks amazing and the blurb made me really interested, but well, she can write whatever and I'd read it. ❤

I loved this one too! And I don’t know how to review it. It’s such an important book and really celebrated, with heavy topics and a review should be written with much attention.

For sure I will write what an italian blogger did, saying that Thomas pointed to much against the figure of white cop. Just shut up. Go home.
Really, I don’t get how the blogger even thought it was a good idea to write that thing.
It’s sad, because my country is hella racist in a brutal way that I didn’t saw around in other places. I was hoping for this book to made someone watch around themself but didn’t fully work.
Angie Thomas did an amazing job and I cannot wait for her next book

I don’t understand why racist people read these books??? Only to bash them? Do they even read them? Because I find it strange to read the book and still be so ignorant after Angie Thomas did such a great job at presenting the issues. But I’ve seen a fair share of awful reviews on Goodreads about THUG being full of ‘reverse racism’ and so on. I think it just shows how ignorant people still are and how much work there still is towards getting to a society with more tolerance.

I remeber to read someone that was mad about the macaroni and cheese few phrases, among the other thing. I laughed so much. Just imagine me, the italian, that looks at american macaroni and cheese with a certain “wtf is that thing”. Apparently this make me racist against americans, by their logic.

I think that I didn’t express what I wanted to say -.- Sorry, if it cames out badly. I was trying to say how it was absurd that they literally called for reverse racism and oppresion for something as macaroni and cheese and two different ways to do it. Also because other white people don’t do that or do it differently in other part of the world. LIke Italians, would strange eye most of American pizza but still… if that is actual oppression…

This was easily one of (if not the) best books I read last year, and I’m so glad that you enjoyed it, too. We need to spread the message of this book far and wide, because it’s something that can deeply impact anybody who comes across it.

Such a good review. You really captured how emotional I felt after finishing the book and so many of the things I loved while reading (all the little details that were so specific, like the Harry Potter references).

I just finished this book the other day! It was powerful and presented some of the issues with racism in an understanding way for those who don’t witness it every day. I had very high expectations for this also. Happy to say that it met those expectations.
