Mini Reviews : Witches, Mythology, Video Games and More

Hey, everyone! I’m Marta and I’m drowning under a huge pile of books I should have reviewed a while ago because of that, I thought it was time for a post with mini-reviews. I know you usually like them, so I hope this will be a win-win situation for all of us.

I’m going to review a total of five books (+ a sample) in this post, I’ll probably have more to say about some books, while with others, I will be more concise.

Alright, let’s get right into it!

Warcross by Marie Lu – ★★★☆☆29385546

I know this might come as a shock to all of you, but I thought Warcross was alright and that’s it. Maybe there were too many expectations from so many positive reviews, I don’t know. I loved the premise very much, the simulations, the championship, it all sounded amazing especially mixed with hackers and assassins. But the secondary characters felt a little flat to me and besides Emika, I don’t feel like I got to know anybody else all that much. Maybe Wildcard is going to make me love the characters more.

Wildcard by Marie Lu (Sample)

I want to thank PRH Global for giving me the chance to read this sample via Netgalley.

The sample had the first 3 – 4 chapters from what I remember and it was really goood. It felt a bit different from Warcross and I was very intrigued with what was going on. It ended very abruptly in a plot-twist (OF COURSE!) and I really want to know what’s going to happen. I started reading this sample because I had doubts about whether I should continue the duology or not, but I’m sold. I’ll read the book, hopefully I’ll love it more than Warcross too.

30340865Our Year of Maybe by Rachel Lynn Solomon –  ★★★★★

Rachel Lynn Solomon is slowly becoming one of my all-time favorite authors, I’m waiting on her third book that sounds even more painful and full of angst than this one and You’ll Miss Me When I’m Gone to make it official. But so far, she is amazing. This book is about co-dependence in friendship, about unrequited love, the consequences of a transplant between friends (how does Rachel come with those bold ideas and execute them so well?? I will never understand). I liked everything about this book and I’d totally recommend it.

Outrun The Wind by Elizabeth Tammi – ★★★★☆

A mythology f/f retelling that I really liked, it was slow at first and it literary took me so long to get into the action and become invested in the story. But when it happened, I started appreciating the story because it was amazing. The premise was very original – Atalanta, the only well known female greek hero, and her famous races being retold with Kahina, a huntress of Artemis being thrown in. They had a hate-to-love relationship that I wish I got to see more of. It was probably the slowest slow-burn romance I’ve ever read and I don’t know, I wanted more. BUT I still really liked it as a whole.

The Wicked Deep by Shea Ernshaw – ★★★★☆

This was a buddy read with Marie @Drizzle and Hurricane Books and it was a pleasure as always. The plot was absolutely intriguing, though ever since I’ve heard that this book is about witches, my interest was piqued and I was 100% sure I’ll love it. My only complaint is that everything was quite predictable. Both of us were able to figure out what was going on, I think we didn’t miss any plot twist, to be honest and that rarely happens to me because I’m usually too lost in the book to try to unravel the secrets. Besides that, it was a very atmospheric read that I would totally recommend during Halloween.

Evidence of the Affair by Taylor Jenkins Reid – ★★★★★

If you’re in a reading slump and you want to read something quick and glorious, I totally recommend this short story by Taylor Jenkins Reid. I’m also adding her to my all-time favorite authors because damn, she’s so talented. I don’t know how she created such a simple, yet dramatic and poignant read in less than 100 pages through letters. I was living for all that drama and all those twists and she’s absolutely glorious. All my admiration to her and now I’m even more excited for Daisy Jones and The Six, just bring it on!

Have you read any of the books I’ve mentioned?

Which one is your favorite or what book are you most excited to read as well?

The Wicked Deep is very atmospheric, so I would absolutely recommend reading it during this season. I loved the curse and the folk-lore, I really wish the author would write a prequel because I’m very interested in this world ❤
I hope you enjoy it! ❤

Awesome books Marta! I’ve read Marie Lu’s Warcross and still can’t move on with what happen between the two lead characters. They both have strong beliefs that contradict with each other. I want to know what will happen next. Then, there’s also this one character that turned out to be alive. I thought it was Hideo’s friend. I haven’t read Wildcard yet but I’m excited. Thanks for informing me that Warcross had a sequel after all. Marie Lu’s works reminded me of “Ready Player One”. This book also highlights the future of gaming. Ever heard of it? Or read it?

I am so deep into witches right now that I watch all the witch shows and I want to keep writing my witchy WIP but at the same time I also want to read more witch books. I added The Wicked Deep to my TBR 😀 I am glad you and Marie enjoyed it despite the book being predictable.

Same about Wildcard, I can’t wait to continue it because those first chapters were really intense. And I think you’ll adore Our Year of Maybe, it was exceptional ❤

Same here! I’ve only seen glowing 5 stars reviews, my expectations were so high and I felt so sad when they weren’t met 😦
I’ve seen lots of people that loved Warcross say the sequel isn’t as good, I’m really interested in finding out what my opinion will be. ❤

Lovely reviews, Marta! ❤ I was so happy to buddy read The Wicked Deep with you, I had such a great time reading it – I'm a bit sad we predicted a little bit of what would happen, but still, I enjoyed it and the atmosphere was so good.
I haven't read anything by Rachel Lynn Solomon just yet, I think I really should 😀

I had such a great time reading it as well, we have to do it again soon! I also can't believe you've read The Night Circus without me *gasps* now I'll never read it as I surely need support for that book. (I forgive you though)
YOU REALLY SHOULD READ SOMETHING BY RACHEL, SHE'S AMAZING. Sorry. I just get a bit fangirl-y. Haha.

I hope the same, I'm a bit stressed out that I didn't love Warcross as everyone on this planet seemed to have loved it. But eh, we can't like every book out there.
Our Year of Maybe was spectacular ❤ Have you read You'll Miss Me When I'm Gone yet?

Oh haha I definitely understand how you feel! I feel the same way with To All the Boys I’ve Loved Before; I know most people loved it but I just didn’t see the appeal. And yes I’ve read You’ll Miss Me When I’m Gone, and I really enjoyed it! ☺️ I hope I’ll enjoy Our Year of Maybe just as much or more 😍

I had no idea she was publishing something new before Daisy Jones and The Six, I was completely shocked when I saw Evidence of the Affair. But it was SO amazing *heart eyes* she works so well with all types of writing and I’m living for the drama in her books.
Same here, I had it on my TBR for a long time before actually getting into it, probably because the blurb made it sound very badass and interesting, but the reviews were kind of ‘meh’. But I loved how folk-loreish it seemed.
Awww, thank you! I was just drowning under piles of books I haven’t reviewed yet and thought I’d do something like that.
      You too! ❤
