How to Grow Your Blog

howtogrowyourblog3.png

Hi, my lovelies! I’m Marta and I’m back with a post on blogging, I’m going to share some tricks and tips on how to grow your blog, I’m going to focus on how to get followers, views and all that stats buzz.

I’ve been officially blogging for a year (and a month now) and I’m quite proud of what I’ve achieved so far. I know that I’m probably still a baby compared to other book bloggers out there, I still have a lot to learn and I’m fully aware of that, bearing this in mind, I still think I can share some things with you, especially to newbies that might feel a bit lost when it comes to gaining followers and having your voice recognized in this community. I have your back, I’m going to give you some advice that will hopefully be helpful to you.

Without further ado, let’s get into the tips and tricks!

#1. Interact with fellow bloggers

I can’t begin to stress how important it is to interact with other bloggers (and not only when you’re first starting out), comment on their blog posts, interact with them on social media, start friendships. Blogging is not a solitary activity, even though you’re writing the posts alone and organizing things and making graphics, you’re part of a community and if you’re going to involve yourself actively in it, you’re going to feel so much more accomplished about everything.

I’ve made so many friends on here, some friends with whom I talk almost daily, some friends that support me whenever I feel down about blogging or even life. I have so much love for them as they’ve helped me stick to my blog with their comments, praises and pieces of advice. I have nothing, but love and gratitude for them.

And besides this social point, interacting with fellow bloggers at the start will be helpful for your blog as well. You comment on someone’s posts and they will probably check your blog out as well, maybe even leave a comment if they like your content. And by checking others’ blogs, you can also get inspiration for your writing, you can find blogging advice on how to avoid some common mistakes, it will help you grow a lot.

You can only win by interacting with others. Share the love, you’re not here to compete with fellow bloggers, you’re here to create your content, have your voice be heard, there’s enough space for all of us.

#2. Share your blog posts on Social Media

I recommend you to share your posts on one social media account at least, I primarily use Twitter because I found it more welcoming and accessible to me than Instagram, for example. I also use Bloglovin’, which is very easy to use – you claim your blog and then your posts will be shared instantly without you doing anything. It’s easier to see posts from people who have other platforms, for example Blogspot or Wix, that won’t show up in the Reader section of WordPress.

Don’t feel annoying because you’re promoting your posts on Social Media, everybody does that as every blogger seeks validation. Though I advise you to share your posts on your profile or on threads reserved to such things (sometimes bloggers want to blog-hop and will require links to your posts – I do that as well sometimes on Twitter), don’t share your links on threads that are on entirely different subjects.

I feel like Twitter is probably the greatest for getting acknowledged by publishers and authors, but also by fellow bloggers, because you can easily interact with everyone and it’s more effective than commenting on blogs because there are Direct Messages – you can spark conversations, you can find common interests besides reading (if there’s such a thing).

10/10 would recommend using your social media accounts to promote your posts.

#3. Pay Attention to the Details

What is popular in the community? What are some of your most liked posts? When do people engage with you the most? If you’re on WordPress, you can check the hours and the day when you get the most views in the Insights tab. If you know those details, you can schedule your posts accordingly to those, because they probably reflect things about your audience, for example their time zone, when they spend time reading blog posts and so on.

Be constant with your posting. You don’t have to post daily, but try to post at least once a week, maybe even more frequently. I understand that time is a big factor here, I had months when I couldn’t post even once a week, even once in two weeks, but it reflected in the views I’ve got, in the decreasing engagament rates. It’s normal because people want new content, if you don’t write constantly, you’ll probably not keep your audience engaged.

#4. Reply to comments on your blog

You might not have time to blog-hop. I know I was blog-hopping so much more when I first started because I didn’t have ARCs to worry about, I didn’t have multiple social media accounts to juggle. But something that I try to stick to religiously is replying to the comments on my blog. If somebody took their time to write a comment on my post, I think the least I can do is to write a reply.

Besides making people feel like you care about them, that their opinion is valued by you, you can get more familiar with your followers. I always try to get to know my followers, talk to them, see what they liked about my post, what are their opinion on whatever subject I addressed in my post. It’s important to interact with your followers and in my opinion, this is a very easy and effective way to do it.

#5. Keep a simple, but attractive design

The design should reflect who you are as a blogger. For example, when I made another header, I wanted to keep my original design, but also choose something related to who am I as a blogger. My blog’s name is The Cursed Books (everybody knows me by this title) and I wanted to give a nudge to it in my header, therefore, putting those horror-ish books on the right side. I also love colorful themes and that’s why I have that background.

I love aesthetics, I want everything to look pretty and neat. But usually when I’m looking at other blogs, I appreciate simple themes, if they are original – that’s a plus. But the best thing you can is to have a theme that is easy to read, a color scheme that isn’t too dark or too light to hurt people’s eyes and completementary colors – don’t use light yellow on white as readibility is the most important thing on a blog.

#6. Participate in weekly memes

I’m probably not the best person to give this advice as I was never able to fully committ to any of the memes even though they are amazing. From what I’ve seen, the most popular are Waiting on Wednesday hosted by Jill at Breaking The Spine and Top Ten Tuesday created by The Broke and the Bookish and then moved to That Artsy Reader Girl. These memes are very popular on the blogosphere, everyone’s posts are kept in one place and they generate lots of views on one’s blog.

#7. Just be yourself and create the content you want to read

Everyone has a unique voice, we all come from different backgrounds and we all have different stories that we can share. Does something in the community bother you, but nobody has said anything about it before? What are you waiting for? Share your thoughts! Most people are respectful on here and if you do receive hate, other bloggers will have your back. It’s important to be frank with your views, your readers will appreciate your honesty.

Great and helpful post! What probably helped me most with getting views were a couple of courses I took on LinkedIn (the one social media site I’m on): “Writing Headlines” and “Analyzing Your Website to Improve SEO.” I had always tried to be fun and witty with my titles, but was made to realize that having the name of my review subject in the title was much more important. Views immediately increased when readers knew what I was actually reviewing! That must sound obvious, but I was completely new to this at the time. . .

Thank you very much! That sounds great, I’ve never took such a course, but I understand your preference on fun and witty titles. I prefer those as well, but clear titles help your readers understand what they’re in for! And it’s useful for search engines as well. Tags are also very helpful! 😊

Nice post, Marta. I am sure this would help many 😊 I totally agree that engaging with the community is the most important thing. Once people get to know you and your content they will definitely support you. This is such a lovely community.
Also, you said it right, memes do generate a lot of traffic. I think the most commented posts on my blog are the memes 😀
I am going to share this in weekly wrap-up 😊

Engaging with the community is so important and probably one of the most rewarding aspects of blogging as well!
Ah, I’ve only written two or three posts that are memes because I usually forget about them 🙈 And I know that most people that join them, are very dedicated to posting constantly.
Aw, thank you! ❤ I’m glad you liked it!

I loved this!! I really should pay more attention to my stats and see what people want to read 😛 It’d help me a lot! But time isn’t my friend )): I haven’t been able to post lately /at all/ … hopefully I’ll get better at time management, and post once a week. Great post, Marta 😀

Time is very important, I relate to not having enough time to focus on stats as much as I would like. I know some people use different programs even to check their stats, but I’m content with using WordPress’ options for now.
I hope you manage to find time, but your life should always be a priority! ❤ You’re doing enough! 😍

This is such a fantastic post, Marta!

I think one of the most important things for me was the interaction I got with fellow bloggers – especially on days/weeks when my motivation would be really down and I felt like what I was doing wasn’t good enough. But knowing that I had friends in this community and that people cared – that really helped and continues to help! And by building these relationships with people, I ended up gaining new visitors from their blogs – either through the comments I left or because friends shared my posts. I will never be able to thank people enough for all the support they’ve shown me over the years.

And I think weekly tags can be fantastic! I did them quite often at the beginning because I had no idea where to find other bookish bloggers and these tags gave me SO many people to check out each week! But they can also get a bit boring if a blogger only includes a cover image and nothing else for any of the topics. I LOVE when people put unique spins on the topics the way Cait often does, for example.

I’m actually the same as you about comments, when I can’t leave them on someone else’s blog I always, always make sure I reply to the ones I get on my posts. I don’t want people thinking I don’t appreciate their continued support because it means the world to me. Someone else’s comment section is also a fantastic place to find new bloggers too, so having your name and genuine comments out there, is going to benefit you too.

Congratulations on a quite awesome first year of blogging and for sharing your experiences with your readers! It’s very much appreciated! 😀

Indeed, interaction is so important and rewarding because as you said, we all have days when we feel like giving up, but our blogging friends can pull us out of those and encourage us to continue. And yes, it helps a lot when others are sharing your posts and letting their audience get to know you.
Yeah, that’s what I noticed at them as well. It’s getting a bit repetitive with everyone doing the same kind of post on the same date 🙈
YES, I’m also on the lookout for new bloggers from the comments sections of others. It’s such an easy way to find other bloggers.
      Thank you!! ❤

I can relate to that, Emma! I always take hiatuses whenever I have my exam sessions since I have 7-8 exams in a month, I don’t read/blog at all during that period and a little bit before that. And my views decrease visibly during those months.
Also, after hiatuses, I find it so hard to get back into posting and reviewing regularly, it’s frustrating. I’m sure you’ll do great ❤

YEEEEY FOR BLOGGING FRIENDSHIPS!!! (and yes I’m back to commenting on all your posts because they are all amazing)

This is helpful for smol ducky bloglings it’s like you’re their protective and fun mum that’s here to help. Honestly the blogging community is lucky to have youuuu ❤️!!

And I found Instagram to be so much more welcoming than Twitter. I mean….it doesn’t help grow my blog at all it’s like 2 different universes….but I STILL LIKE IT!! Yet I advise bloglings LEAVE INSTA ALONE because that doesn’t give you anyyyy followers 😂. Twitter is your best friend folks.

Awww, I'm trying my best to help people in ways that I can, I'm not the most experienced blogger out there and I surely have lots of other stuff to learn, but if I can help, I will totally do it! ❤
I'm actually going to write a post about how I've perceived Instagram and why it's not really working for me, but I'm happy that you like it there ❤

That's amazing, I should try to do it more, I think one of the biggest problem is that I have an almost overcrowded WordPress Reader and it can get very stressful at times to keep up with the posts.

I can’t believe you’ve only been blogging for a year, you’re like a pro already. I completely agree with all the points you make and when it comes to growth I believe that engagement is key. I know I’ve been slacking on many fronts of the blog recently due to work commitments, but I always try to take one evening just to catch up on comments. I’ve been horrible at blog hopping recently, so the least I can keep replying. I always feel like other social media platforms are there to help boost your main platform, the blog, so I will unabashedly promote my posts on twitter anyway I can.

Really, I can’t believe that I’ve been blogging for a year either (but for different reasons as I’m not sure when time flew so fast). Thank you so much, Lois! You’re very sweet as always! ❤
Engagement is definitely the key and I relate so much to your feelings, blog hopping can be very time-consuming and sometimes I don't have that time, besides college, I'm also reading and writing blog posts and watching tv shows and whatever, it leaves me with little time on my hands most of the time :-/
That is the right attitude! ❤

These are great tips! I’ve been blogging since 2011 but I still feel like a newbie blogger at times because I was so unsociable in my first couple of years and I took too many unannounced hiatuses, so that took a huge blow to my stats. It never hurts to get back into the swing of interacting though 🙂

I can relate to the unannounced hiatuses, I try most of the time to announce them, but sometimes I get mini-hiatuses where I just don't write as frequently because I don't have inspiration or I'm not feeling like blogging and those moments really have impacts on my blogging experience as I feel like I'm losing out on many things in the community :-/
Indeed, it's never too late to improve things or try more! ❤

I'm so happy you mentioned interacting, you know how much that part of blogging means to me and it makes me so happy to do it and it's a great way to boost your blog too, so it's only the BEST thing ever haha 🙂 but yes to acknowledging your own comments all the time, even when you can't interact too much with others, at least interact with people on your own blog. I know when I comment, I am looking for interaction and I'm always sad when the blogger never replies :/
    Lovely post! 🙂

Ahhh, Marie, I really don’t think you need any of my advice since you’re doing so fabulously by yourself. ❤ And it means a lot to me, you're way too kind!
Same, I can understand when some bloggers take a while to reply, but never replying to your comments – I don't understand that because I get so fangirly whenever I get another comment and even if I don't like it instantly or comment back instantly, I'm always coming back to it and reply to it in the end because as you said, interaction is SO IMPORTANT.
      Thank you very much! ❤

I love these tips because they’re so incredibly relevant no matter where you are in your blogging journey! Interacting with other bloggers has definitely been my number 1 way to grow, but it’s also so amazing because you remember you’re not in this journey alone. Plus, you get to meet so many amazing people and make such wonderful friends ❤ I also think the blog design tip is a very important (and often underlooked) tip! I tend to return to blogs that I find aesthetically pleasing ^_^

    Great post, Marta!!

I think you're amazing at interacting with people, you come across as very kind and nice to everyone, so it's no wonder that it helped you grow your blog!
Yes, making blogging friends was so essential to me because it's probably one of the reasons why I'm still blogging because I have that support and I can talk about my struggles with them and they completely understand and make feel better about it.
Same here! I try to avoid doing that because I know not everyone is familiar with Photoshop or editing, but a color scheme where things are visible and readeable is a must!
      Thank you very much! ❤

That sounds like a great way to look at the weekly memes because sometimes there's not time or I have no idea what I'd write about that subject. It's good to know that you can sit out of the weekly memes sometimes.

  15. NeriSiren says:

This was very helpful! The only point I disagree with is the need to post constantly or else risk losing your audience. When I think about the blogs I’ve loved the most, I have never given up on the blogger because they took a few weeks off. Their content was compelling enough that I was willing to wait for more. I’d personally rather read something that was well thought out and planned than something that was rushed through just for the sake of posting something every week. That’s not to say I don’t like spontaneous posts, too, but I’ve never judged a blogger who decided to post less often because of other commitments or even just burn-out. We’re doing this for fun, and for free, so we shouldn’t put so much pressure on ourselves to crank out posts faster than we’re comfortable with.

    Liked by 1 person

    • Marta says:

Ah, I didn’t mean you’d risk losing your audience, more likely that posting very frequently usually means more views and followers for your blog. I completely agree that if you don’t have the time or the inspiration, you shouldn’t write some posts just for the sake of following your schedule or getting views. But if you have these, it’s beneficial for you to create content frequently.
