Best & Worst Cover Changes

Hello, bookish people! It’s high time I talk about some serious matters on here – cover changes are very serious, don’t you dare take them lightly – this chat was sparked by that awful cover change of Warcross. If you don’t know what I’m talking about, settle down because I’m about to ruin your life and everything you knew and loved.

The hardcover of Warcross has the first cover and now the paperback will have this new very colorless cover. Why? I have no idea. I’ve never felt more thankful for getting myself the Romanian-version paperback. Besides the talk about the cover change, there has been some discussion on the reason why this happened, some bookish people speculated that it has something to do with marketing Warcross as a boyish book. I really hope that’s not the reason why they did this.

Anyway, now that I showed you my most recent disappointment in matters of covers, let’s talk some of the best and some of the not-so-good cover changes!

Lovely Cover Changes That I 100% Approve

Untitled-3.jpg

  1. Shatter Me by Tahereh Mafi – I’m going to start with an obvious one, but how couldn’t I include this one? Look at the glow-up, look at everything. The first cover is kind of basic, but the new one is so much better, I feel like it captures the feeling of the novel better as well, excluding the superior aesthetic.

2. Solitaire and Radio Silence by Alice Oseman – I can’t complain about the first covers because they were absolutely gorgeous as they were, but now with these new matching covers, I don’t know, they are so artsy. I adore them so much.

3. Anna and the French Kiss series by Stephanie Perkins – I’m not even a huge fan of this series, but this is surely one of the best cover change I’ve ever seen. The new covers make me feel the wanderlust, the love of travel, the old ones feel kind of awkward (?). Especially the one for Lola and the Boy Next door. Best decision ever.

4. The Secret History by Donna Tartt – one of my favourite books has such a cool cover and yes, I’m talking about the second one. I think the first one (the black one) is a bit impersonal, while the new one has this greek mythology/intellectual feeling I approve of because that’s the book – pretentious intellectuals speaking of latin, greek and murder.

ashja (9)

5. The Summer series by Jenny Han – I love the new covers so much, just look at how pretty and colorful they are!!! They are also super summer-y, which I didn’t think the first ones were or not all that much. This series is one that I actually loved a lot back when I read it and I always thought the covers were meh, so happy they changed them with these beauties.

Cover Changes That I Could Have Stayed Without

  1. Code Name Verity by Elizabeth Wein – I really think they should have kept the first cover for all the editions because it’s so gorgeous and I think it’s fitting with the plot. The other two aren’t bad either, I just have a huge love for the first one *heart eyes*.

ashja (9)

2. Juniper Lemon’s Happiness Index by Julie Israel – I ADORE the first cover, the confetti idea is great and very much related to the story, Juniper’s face is spot on, the colors are perfect, I love the font, it’s just a perfect cover. The second one is okay, but doesn’t tell me a lot about the story unlike the first one.

3. The Diviners by Libba Bray – I haven’t read this series yet, but when it first came out I was hugely intrigued by the cover and the title. It’s very original and I like it very much. The second one – not so much. It reminds me of an alien novel and I’m kind of positive the book has no aliens (???).

ashja (9)

4. The Winner’s Trilogy by Marie Rutkoski – okay, this is one of my favourite book series, therefore I have strong feelings about everything that happens with it. DON’T HURT MY BABIES.   The thing is I love both set of covers aesthetically speaking, they are beautiful and you could even argue that Kestrel looks fiercer on the second set, buuuut that’s not my baby. Kestrel is one of the few heroines in fantasy that doesn’t fight, she’s a strategist, her most lethal weapon is her brain. And those cover changes don’t show it at all? I don’t approve.

ashja (9)

5. Lips Touch by Laini Taylor – I think the first cover is really Laini Taylor-esque, it reminds me a lot of her series, Daughter of Smoke and Bone, and it seems to match the story well enough. I don’t like the other two because they are kind of bland??? Laini Taylor deserves better, really.

ashja (9)

Now that I’ve showed you some good cover changes and some not-so-good cover changes. Why do you think cover changes happen at all?

In my opinion, it’s mostly a marketing move, many of those have new covers that are supposed to be in theme with the new trends, others probably do it to widen their audiences. Some of them are soooo unexpected that I don’t know why they happen at all. I’m quite sure you can think of a book that had a gorgeous cover (very praised, on everyone’s cover lust shelf) that still got a cover change, one that probably disappointed the audience because most of us love the old covers more (we bookworms are rather nostalgic creatures and while we read said book, we surely fell in love with the cover, you have no chance to change our minds).

What are your thoughts on book cover changes? Are they really necessary?

Do you agree with me on some of these? What are your best and worst cover changes?

I love the cover change for Shatter Me and Anna series, but The Winner’s Curse is the WORST! The new covers are okay actually, but they are such an obvious ToG rip-off it’s hard to look at!

I just found out about Warcross cover change and I am not happy at all. Why would you ruin a perfectly good and eyecatching cover is beyond me :/

I feel like they are not good at all for Kestrel because she’s not a warrior, that’s what I love the most about her how she’s a smart girl who gets shit done without combat and so on, just scheming and strategies. These covers don’t show it at all. 😦
I KNOW, I’m so mad about it. I hope the second book will have a colorful cover.

They changed the covers for The Diviners series again, and if they had stayed with the original covers I would have been super excited, but, I am also just rather glad that they didn’t stay with the second set of covers because they were not great.

What I want to know about the Warcross cover change is if it is any indication at the direction of the cover choice for the conclusion of the duology. If they give us a crappy cover for Wildcard, I’m going to be so upset.

Ohh, again? That’s a bit chaotic on their part. But I suppose you’re right and it would have been quite disastrous if they kept the second set of covers.
Ahhh, I didn’t think about this before, but now that you mentioned it, I’m quite worried because I don’t want such a bland cover for the second one. 😢

Same here! ❤ Aw, I’m glad I made you be interested in The Winner’s Trilogy as it’s one of my favourites and I would so love it if more people read it and fangirled with me about it.

I love the new covers for Jenny Han’s The Summer books! I always found the old ones way too plain and didn’t do the books justice and the new ones are so pretty I just need them!

Love this post! I’m salty about the Warcross cover change, totally unnecessary in my opinion (the only reason I’d but it is for the Legend bonus story). I think some of the worst cover changes I’ve seen (and still can’t let go of) is the cover change for Beth Revis’s Across the Universe trilogy. Middle-school shelf is still quite disappointed about that one.

    • Marta says:

I didn’t know they added a bonus for Legend in this version, interesting. Probably more people would be interested in buying it. 😑 I remember the covers for Across the Universe, I thought they were mismatched, did they change the first cover too in the end?

Yeah, it has a very industrial vibe like the other 2 covers. I know the older covers weren’t amazingly beautiful, but I just think they fit the series’ story so much better than the newer ones. Sort’ve like Warcross!

SOOOO agree about the winners curse series!!! I loved those covers before and the new ones just hurt my soul because they aren’t nearly as beautiful and don’t represent the books nearly as well 😦 *tries to contain disappointment* great post!

    • Marta says:

YES! They really don’t represent the books as well as the old ones did. I loved how bad-ass Kestrel looked in her beautiful dresses, that sword more a sign of her power rather her readiness to go to combat.
      Thank you very much!! ❤

No! The Original Winner’s Trilogy covers are soooooo pretty! Why would they change them? Ugh 😦 How sad, The new ones are…I don’t know. They definitely wouldn’t entice me to pick them up off the shelf if that was the first time I saw them.

BUT! I hadn’t seen those new covers for The Summer series. SO CUTE! And about 200% better haha. I love cover comparisons, fun post 🙂

Probably to look more fantasy-like 😢 I’m happy that the other covers are still available though, I hope to own the physical copies at some point and I surely want the old covers.
They are indeed very cute and sooo summer-y, absolutely adore them!! ❤ Thank you very much!!!

I do like the Shatter Me re-do. I didn’t realize the covers without people were the new ones for the French Kiss books. Honestly, I usually like books without people them better. If there are people on the covers, I don’t want to see their faces. Oh, and I am NOT a fan of the movie tie-in covers.

    • Marta says:

I agree so much with you, I prefer covers without people as well, probably because there are fewer chances for the covers to be awful??? If they put people on the cover, there’s a possibility to mess up with the way the characters should look and so on.

yaaas i LOVE the first cover to Juniper Lemon’s Happiness Index! That’s actually what first piqued my interest when I saw the novel! The second one has pretty colors but is honestly pretty boring sooooo. Lovely discussion, i loved seeing all of the covers! 🙂

Same here, it’s sooo amazing!!! And I loved the model’s facial expression, it really looked authentic to the novel’s subject. This one is eh, generic.
Thank you very much!! Glad you enjoyed! ❤

Ugh, cover changes can be the absolute worst (especially in the middle of a series but that’s a whole other issue again). I totally agree on all of your choices, because well the ones you said looked better, did look better hahaha
If I could add anything to the list, it’s that I really like the new covers for The Wrath and the Dawn, even though I didn’t dislike the original ones. And I also like the new matching covers for the Shadowhunter books, because the spines form a picture.

    • Marta says:

Ahh, cover changes in the middle of a series are the absolute worst. Someone banish them from this universe forever!!!
So happy you agreed to them, means we have the same cover aesthetic ❤❤❤ I pondered whether I should add those, but I’m kind of indifferent to that change, I loved the first ones, I also really like the new ones. Ahhh, yes, I think I saw those, love matching spines!!
      Thank you! ❤

Hm what the heck did I just see, my eyes are hurting from seeing some of these covers omg hahahaha.
WHY are they changing the Warcross cover?! It is soooo good and colorful, it was PERFECT this way and that change makes absolutely NO sense?! I am reaaally mad now, why.
Also mad: about that change for The Winner’s series?! This is the first time I am seeing these covers and…. why. The original covers are absolutely stunning, I love them SO much.
I’m really glad about the Shatter Me cover change, though, these are some of my favorite book covers of all times, THE AESTHETIC IS GOALS.
    Fantastic post!! ❤ ❤ ❤

Hahahaha, you just have some bad covers in your eyes, Marie 😢
I don’t know, it’s kind of annoying that they are doing this with the paperback, this way there won’t be any paperbacks with the original cover and I know some people really prefer paperbacks to hardcovers.
ME TOO! Still unhappy about that one, at least they reassured people that the old covers would still be available…
Shatter Me is the definition of a glow up in ya lit.
      Thank you very much!!! ❤

THEY’RE CHANGING THE COVER OF WARCROSS?! HOW DID I NOT KNOW THIS! I’m really disappointed
Oh and DON’T EVEN GET ME STARTED ON THE DIVINERS! I loved that book and all of these stupid cover changes do not do it justice.

    Liked by 1 person

    • Marta says:

I think it’s the silver one is the cover they are going for with the paperback edition. I really want to read The Diviners, I guess I’ll just stick with ebooks rather than go through that fiasco 😂

  12. Kristilyn says:

That Warcross cover change is so weird! lol. I do love the first one. And I like the first Donna Tartt better than the next … I just love big bold fonts. LOVE the Summer series new covers. And I definitely prefer the first for Code Name Verity. I think the ones that I hated at first were the covers for Beth Revis’s Across the Universe trilogy. Though the new covers have grown on me. Lately I don’t pay attention to covers, but I do prefer artsy ones, or fun fonts, to books with just people on the cover.

Big bold fonts are life, really ❤ Ohhh, I remember the first cover for Across The Universe – it was rather beautiful and then the next ones got more bland. Did they change the first one as well??

i love this post!! honestly i hate both the warcross covers so it’s all the same to me. but the winner’s trilogy cover change is one of the most frustrating things of my LIFE. they made them so much uglier!!

This is such a nice collection of books covers for both the categories 🙂 I 100% agree with your choices. And I certainly didn’t know about that Warcross cover change. I mean, why would they do that? It’s not a black-and-white era anymore.
I think, most of the time the cover changes depend upon the territorial rights. I once read somewhere, for eg, the UK covers are more focused on the covers showing some part of the story, while US covers are more character oriented? I am not sure though, but sometimes the cover changes are really worst.

    • Marta says:

Hahaha, I don’t know why they are doing that. I think it’s their cover for the paperback edition 😢 Ah, I think it could be an aspect! I feel like Romanian covers usually keep the same design as the original one – they do change them sometimes, but most of the times they are kind of the same. But yes, I could see that in UK vs US covers, for example for Daughter of Smoke and Bone. I have the UK cover and it’s very much plot-oriented while the US has a character cover. Great point! ❤
