The Tolkien Lover Book Tag

Hello, everyone! I’m here with a book tag because I haven’t done one in a while and I’m a bit in a blogging slump as I’ve mentioned before – I’ve been trying to write two reviews for a while now without being able to (i’m dying over here, please someone ghost-write for me) – therefore, I’ll fangirl about Tolkien for now and hope for the best!

This book tag was created by Kristen Kieffer and I wasn’t tagged by anyone, I’m doing this out of the pure need to fangirl, bye.

Let’s get into the questions!

1. The Lord of the Rings is Tolkien’s most famous work. But did you read the books or see the movies first? What are your opinions on each?

I’ve watched the movies first, I think I was like 12 years old when I watched the first movie and now I’m 20 years old and have watched the movies way too many times. I’ve lost count, I watched it more than ten times, though. That’s for sure. Okay, now consider the fact that I usually don’t rewatch things, now you understand how much I love those movies.

I’ve read the first book back in 2014 and I would have read it sooner if I wasn’t worried that I might not like it. Now think about it, I’ve grown with this series like some of you did with Harry Potter, but people kept telling me that Tolkien’s books are boring, that they fell asleep to them and yadayadayada. I’m impatient, I love my books very fast-paced, therefore I was intimidated. But I loved the books as well, they were indeed slow and very descriptive, but I enjoyed them because they enlarged my knowledge of the Middle Earth universe even more. Love every bit of this world.

2. Who is your favorite member of The Fellowship? Does this person differ from your favorite Lord of the Rings character in general?

It’s so hard to choose! Stop making me choose between my faves.

Look, I’ve had the worst crush in the history of crushes on Legolas. It still comes back from time to time because he’s too precious for this world. I love how he’s an introvert bad-ass who cares so much about his friends and he loves nature and omg. I’ll stop right now. He’s probably my favourite.

But I’ll also mention Sam as a very close favourite because he’s loyal, he’s giving so much to the world and he deserves so much better. He basically created the whole cinnamon roll trend. DON’T FIGHT ME ON THAT.

3. Now for some fun! If you could be any character from The Hobbit, which would you be and why?

Bilbo? Perhaps, Bilbo. I’m not a huge fan of the Baggins family (I guess I’m just more of a secondary characters stan), but the whole ‘wizard-comes-to-take-you-on-an-adventure’ sounds amazing and I’m so on board with that! GANDALF, PLEASE, I’VE BEEN WAITING FOR YOU TO TAKE ME ON AN ADVENTURE FOR YEARS.

4. Tolkien’s work goes beyond The Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit. Have you ever read any of his other books? How about books about Tolkien?

I’ve started reading The Silmarillion a while ago, but never finished it – probably not the right time because the book is very heavy with mythology and it has so many characters and the action can be very hard to follow at times. I’ll get back to it soon, hopefully.

I read Tolkien’s World: Paintings of Middle-Earth and it was really beautiful because we’ve got to see the world as it was imagined by a Tolkien nerd in paintings. The paintings were indeed gorgeous. Would recommend!

5. Let’s talk romance! Pooling from all of Tolkien’s work, which two characters do you ship together most?

Hmm. I have so many otps and crackships in this fandom. I probably ship Aragorn and Arwen the most, I also really love Faramir and Éowyn if we’re talking canon.

If we’re not talking canon, I think I really liked Bilbo and Thorin in The Hobbit, the videos of them on youtube are so cuuute!

6. Alright, alright. We all have at least one thing from Tolkien’s work that makes us waaaay too giddy and excited. Something that we could talk about for days. What’s yours?

I actually have no idea how to reply to this because I can talk about any aspect of LOTR for ages. But I think the brotps would be something I could talk about for centuries. I love all the friendships – Sam & Frodo, Legolas & Aragorn, Legolas & Gimli, Merry & Pippin, all of them, really. I just love everything!

I’m also very passionate about talking about how much better the world would have been with more female characters. They are under-represented in the series and that’s probably the only complaint I have about this series. I did write lots of LOTR fanfiction to make up for this aspect though.

I tag anyone who wants to do it, I’m not sure how many Tolkien nerds I have over here! I hope you won’t hate me too much for doing a Tolkien-themed post when I already talk so much about the books anyway, buuuut as I said Tolkien Day was in late March and I really am in a slump. I feel like I’m getting a free pass to fangirl some more.

A little announcement

I’m going to respond to some questions for a special Q&A since I reached 800 followers here (yay, I’m so thrilled, thank you so much for all the support!!), if you want to ask me something, head on Twitter and I’ll reply to everything in a blog post soon! Thank you!

I don’t know what I would do without you all guys! You’re making blogging so amazing!

Are you a Tolkien nerd? Who’s your favourite character from the trilogy?

Have you read any book written by Tolkien besides The Hobbit and Lord of the Rings?

hahaha, I can understand your reasoning, but then Mordor is sooooo far away. One doesn’t simply walk into Mordor, y’knooooow. I feel the same about hearing people fangirl no matter the series! ❤

Okay, so I will let you know that I actually did not read the book – for the very same reasons you said you were hesitant too, because they are rumored to be boring and long and very descriptive, haha, but I do love the movies and the universe to bits. Maybe someday I’ll read the books but I do love reading about your love for this series, whether it’s movies, books, anything else. ❤
SAM CREATED THE CINNAMON ROLL TREND OMG MARTA that is SO VERY TRUE??!! I love him way too much – completely respect your choice to love Legolas more, he's such an adorable character and I love him so much as well, but in my heart Sam will always be the first one he is just SO PRECIOUS. ❤
I'm a bit sad, yes, about the lack of female characters in this, but… WHERE IS YOUR FANFICTION SO I CAN READ IT?! 😛
Wow, I got a bit overboard here, sorry hahahaha. Brilliant tag and answers! 😀

I remember you saying you didn’t read the books and I totally understand it, Marie! I was so nervous when I first started The Fellowship because it really is very different from the movies, I feel like the movies are so much more focused on the characters than the books are (the latter are more into plot and the universe). I’m still in wonder at how creative Tolkien was and I appreciate the books as well.
AHHHH, YES FOR LOVING SAM. Though I should have seen it coming because you’re as much of a cinnamon roll as he is (waaaait, I remember you don’t like cinnamon, you mentioned it in a post, you’re as much of a cute cupcake as he is). I appreciate Sam so much for his loyalty, that scene in Mordor where he’s all like ‘i’ll carry you’ – I’m dead, we all deserve a Sam.
Hahahaha, I think I only published one chapter on fanfiction.net, but not even I know where it is or what it was called, hopefully soon I will be showing you some original stuff.
You totally didn’t go overboard, don’t worry! You know I love your long comments.<3

AWWW you are adorable, remembering that I actually hate cinnamon haha, but I’ll take a cupcake anytime 😛
I love that scene so SO MUCH when he says that he will carry him and AHHHHH always gives me all the feels ahah.
YAY I am ALL for original stuff, can’t waitt to read them someday 😀

Hahahaha, yeah, I remember that because you made that funny pun about croissants, you french people and your croissants.
YES, that scene was amazing, I’ll never forget that! The Return of The King is amazing, makes me very nostalgic whenever I watch it. I feel like The Fellowship is great because it introduces us to the world, then The Two Towers is full of action and The Return of the King is the ending and it’s sooo sad.
I’ve got a few ideas lately, but I’m not sure what I want to write… I’ll keep you updated.

You need to stop telling me about LOTR, because I sooo want to re-watch all of the movies now haha. 😛
Yes please, keep me updated, I’d love to reaad your stories 🙂

I think that might be an understatement, but okaaay.
Hahahaha, I feel like that’s the most lovely thing someone ever told me. Don’t forget to fangirl with me when you re-watch them because I’m always here for LOTR feels.
maybe this summer break will be a lucky one…

I actually have to confess that, like Marie, I did not read the books. My dad has them in German and it looks cool … but he never even finished them? So I thought they might not be for me either and now I am just not into the idea of reading it anymore? I am soooorry!!!!
Anyway, WAS THIS TAG CREATED SPECIFICALLY FOR YOU???? I feel like it was. It must have been.

    • Marta says:

Ahhh, do you have any idea why he didn’t finish them? I know lots of people don’t finish them for various reasons, usually because Tolkien gets too much into describing landscapes and such.
I THINK IT WAS MADE FOR ME. I WAS BORN TO DO THIS TAG!!! You’ll probably try to read the books at some point because hanging out with me will rub off on you. MUHAHAHAHA.

No, sorry. I think he just lost interest. It was taking him too long to read and then he just … moved on? I am not going to say I will never read them (cause never say never) but I can assure you it won’t be anytime soon haha

I don’t think Tolkien books are boring. Not at all. I’ve watched The Lord of the Rings countless time as well and I love it deeply. My favourite character is definitely Sam. They all are obviously so unique and important in this story but Sam is just so true, simple, loyal and at the same time courageous and brave! 😊
