Things I Wish Non-Readers Stopped Doing

fd9e8

Hello, lovelies! Today I’m going to write a post that is highly inspired by my daily life as a bookworm. I know you’re going to relate to some of these, especially if you’re surrounded by non-readers or heathens (like I am). Below are some things that I wish non-readers knew about us, our books and our habits. Let’s get right into this!

#1 : Suggesting me to watch the movie/tv show instead.

#how about no

You know these people, they see you read a book and their immediate reaction is ‘hey, you know there’s a movie of this book, right? why don’t you watch it instead of reading the book?’.

These people frustrate me to no end. Don’t they know that it’s possible to do both – read the book and watch the movie??? Don’t they know that they are both very different experiences? I think this happens because these non-readers see reading as a very tedious activity – something that takes up a lot of time and concentration – while movies and tv shows are more accessible to them?

Whatever the reason for this behaviour is, please stop telling your fellow bookworm friend to watch the movie instead and stop bothering with the book because (s)he will dislike you forever. BYE.

#2 : Telling me that I’m reading too much.

This one has different variations – it can go like “you’re reading too much, you’re a bit obsessed with reading, don’t you think?’ or it can go like “shouldn’t you focus more on school/college/your social life instead of reading so many books?”

And the answers to both of these questions is obviously NO. Look, if I wanted to do anything else, I would be doing that instead of reading. It’s obvious that I don’t want to go to parties or study or go socialize since I’m reading. I’m reading and that’s what I want to do. End of story. Plus, there’s never too much reading. Do you have any idea how many books there are there in the wild? Millions, billions, too many to count. There’s a lot of work to be done and you are stopping me from reading all THOSE books with your pointless lecture, Susan.

giphy.gif

(my face whenever someone tells me there are other things in life besides books)

#3 : Starting conversations with me when I’m reading.

I think that’s an obvious and very documented one, as the movie one, but it has to be on this list because why? You see me reading a book, obviously being very busy – like too busy to talk to you – but you start a conversation anyway. What’s the logic of it? If I was doing anything else – from watching a movie to writing a school paper, you wouldn’t do it. Why do you think reading is less important??? I want to focus on those characters and what’s happening in my book, stop telling me about your life. I DON’T CARE RIGHT NOW. Can’t you see my pained face? Can’t you see my longing eyes that keep glancing down to my book? Can’t you see I’m counting down the seconds until you leave?

giphy (1)

#4 : Stop threatening my books!!!

Okay, this one might be only directed to my mom. She once said that she will throw my books out the window because of dust or something stupid like that. (I HAVEN’T FORGIVEN HER SINCE THEN)

Also, my books aren’t taking up too much space, staaaap saying that, books have souls and you’re hurting them with your ignorant behaviour.

giphy (2)

#5 : Assume things about me and other bookworms

You can’t read so much unless you never get out of house. You must be jobless and/or awful at school/college/university. You probably have no friends. You’re weird and probably a nerd.

giphy (3).gif

Or we’re all just a bunch of people with different personalities who enjoy literature. What do you think about this, buddy?

#6 : Thinking I read so much because I want to impress others

Bruh, everyone knows I’m not reading so much to impress some commoners, but to take over the world.

NbJRNQA

This usually happens when I show my non-readers who act interested in reading see my reading challenge and they start asking me why I read so much and I try to explain them that I do it because I love reading. (such a foreign concept)  And since the concept of actually reading because you enjoy it is so weird, they instantly figure out that I do it to seem intelligent, to impress teachers or whoever seems important enough to them. Also, probably some of them think I’m lying because it’s inhumanly possible to read more than 10 books in a year.

READING IS ENJOYABLE AND I DO IT BECAUSE I ADORE LOSING MYSELF IN OTHER WORLDS WITH PEOPLE THAT DON’T SUCK (LIKE YOU OBVIOUSLY DO).

#7 : Saying ‘they are fictional. they don’t exist’

That usually happens when I’m very invested in a character or a story and I’m analyzing it a lot or ranting about how they deserved better. And then a wild non-reader comes into the picture and whispers ‘why do you care so much? it’s not like they are actual humans’

giphy (4)

How do I explain to these people that sometimes I care more about fictional characters than actual humans? I don’t think they would comprehend such a scandalous thing.

#8 : Behave like bookworms are aliens.

There are times when I’m reading or fangirling about characters and otps and I can see non-readers staring at me like I’m this strange form of existence that should be researched. I can see in their eyes that they just don’t understand why I’m so invested in reading and in those fictional worlds.

BUUUUT, there’s hope for us in this world, my fabulous bookworms, because some non-readers are actually nice and buy us books from our wish-list and try to understand our obsessions and those are the best kind of human-beings. (sadly, I haven’t met many, but as I said, there’s still hope)

What are some of the worst things a non-reader ever said to you?

This isn’t necessarily something people say but rather what they do. Whenever I’m at work reading in the break room, if someone else comes in the room they turn on the television which makes it impossible to read. It’s one of the most obnoxious things ever.

I totally understand it, though I don’t have an issue with the TV running while I read (I’m used to it), but I think it’s really obnocious to do it in a break room. :-/

I agree, but hopefully it’s not that bad since there are still many children interested in reading. I don’t think reading will ever die as a hobby, especially since us, bloggers, are here to keep promoting books! ❤

Yes to all of these! But I think the one thing that bothers me the most is that people kind of tend to pity because I read a lot? Or they’re like “oh let me offer you something better to do…” or “you must be so bored you’ve resorted to reading!” and I’m all “um… this is my choice. i’m not bored at all. go away.”

Exactly! I feel like so many people (especially extroverts) have this tendency of assuming you’re reading only because you haven’t found the right party or whatever and they’re the right person to change that. Nope. I’m fine, I really enjoy reading – more than I enjoy doing anything.

Oh my gosh, these things are soooo relevant!!! Like, amazingly so! Every time someone says they want me to watch the show instead I just want to punch holes in the wall xD (or… not the wall… :D) And the funniest one is when they say “spend time with meee/uuus” xD Honestly, I’ve been caught reading in a group of people in a staycation dance school camp. In the middle of EVERYONE hanging out outside. I even have a photo 😀 maybe I’d use it if I didn’t look completely underslept and sad in it xD (I can even tell you which book I was reading. Maybe five years ago. LOL)

Oh my gosh, I can’t believe your mom threatens your books! I have been lucky with the family I was born into. My mom has dragged books she found by the dumpster, BECAUSE THEY’RE BOOKS. You can’t not save them. Another time we went to a book sale BY THE KILOGRAM because this old library was closing down. So yeah. Brought back two bin bags full of old books!

But do admit, we are reading this much to impress others A LITTLE BIT xD but not for the reason they think we are. We just want to get done with those TBRs xD

Wonderful post, I am so sharing it this Sunday 🙂

That thing with reading when you’re with a huge group of people is so me! I do that all the time, especially at college, especially when people are all like ‘let’s bond, let’s go there, let’s talk about the power of communication and interaction’ and I’m sitting there like ‘yap…I’m interacting very well with those characters. thank you very much’.
My mom would never do anything to my books, she’s just bluffing because apparently books are the only things I care enough about to get attacked. But sadly, neither of my parents are huge readers. My mom used to read more when she was younger and my dad is more of a movie/tv shows fan. So, I’m a bit jealous of you, I would have loved to share this love with someone in my family.
Hahaha, yeah, but that doesn’t count because we want to impress other readers with how good we are, rarely non-readers. I, for example, feel very weird talking about reading with non-readers because they get wide eyes and they’re like ‘but it’s impossible to read that much, are you insane?”
Thaaank you very much, Evelina!! I’m so happy you liked it!

I LOVE THIS POST, everything is 300% relatable here. Thankfully, I am surrounded by people who understand my love for reading, or just leave me the heck alone because they know better by now, so I get to avoid a lot of these remarks, but still.. all of these are so annoying. The movie and the book are such different experiences, sometimes they’re polar opposites, even, and one can and will never, ever replace the other. I also hate when people assume something of me because I’m reading a whole lot… that does not make me jobless or just a nerd that does not do anything, it just means that I make time to read because I love it ….it’s so frustrating that these simple things just don’t make sense in other people’s minds??!

YAAY! You liking my posts always make me feel so good!! ❤ I'm quite sad that I don't have many readers in my life or not anybody as passionate as I am. I just have some casual readers that don't really understand the bookworm life. Right? I've always been a nerd, so that doesn't really touch me. But I'm a three-dimensional person, I have other passions and hobbies. But to be honest, I dread the moment when I have to work full time because it will mean I'll lose a lot of reading time. I've been considering lately getting a job in the literary field just because of that, haha!

YOU SHOULD consider it and do it, I’m sure you’d be brilliant in that field ❤
And don't worry – despite working full time, I still manage to read an okay amount of books, it's all a question of time management, enjoying the lunch breaks, long commute or evenings to spend time with our books 😀

This post is relatable as hell!! I especially hate the ones who interrupt my reading when they can see how much I am engrossed in another world. Or maybe they can’t see because they are not bookish?? Dunno.
But yes, I remember the day before yesterday, my mom had replaced only a pen stand from my shelf with another and I kind of lost it!! It seems silly, but I can’t bear to see anyone else touching my books or bookshelf beside me.

    Aaaaaanyway, LOVED this post! ❤

That’s very annoying! I mean, let’s say I could understand it if I look bored (but that rarely happens), but if I look absolutely engrossed in the book I’m reading, please don’t interrupt me!! I think they just don’t understand how important books/reading is to us, sadly.
I totally understand that! My mom arranged my books once when we changed the shelves and the furniture and I thought I was going to die when I saw how the book one from a series was in a place, the second book was in another. It was a mess and I don’t think I ever moved faster in my life to do something.
      Thank you very much!! ❤

I know right!! But in that moment we have to maintain a forced smile when actually we went to beat the hell out of that person for interrupting! XD

LOL. I totally understand. That day, I just entered my room and halted immediately because I knew something was wrong and then I saw what had happened. It’s scary even if the books are touched by our very own parents!!

        You’re welcome! ❤

How dare anyone suggest you watch something INSTEAD of reading!?!?!?! I mean, I am all here for TV adaptations and movies. Like I am the Queen of TV, but just no! There is an order to things. You read it, you watch it, and then you know what to complain about. There are quite a lot of adaptations, so sometimes I accidentally watch something that is based on some kind of written format first, but then I mostly still want to read the book at some point.
Ugh .. non-readers … I had some guys in uni who always assumed I was reading something to look smart. I had a big Fitzgerald obsession around the time the new Gatsby movie came out and a person literally said “of course you wouldn’t want to be mainstream and rather read another story of his” with a condescending voice, because I was reading The Last Tycoon.

I love you so much, Kat! This comment is absolutely perfect and you’re indeed the Queen of TV! *applauds*
I just can’t understand why people aren’t interested in reading the books or knowing the differences between the book and movie. Sometimes I watch movies with non-readers and I would tell them afterwards ‘that was different in the books, it went like this blah blah blah’ and they have no interest in knowing and this is so foreign to me. Whenever I watch the movie first, I google the book and I read reviews to see whether I should read the book too!
The Great Gatsby is amazing and I really loved the book! ❤ I think people especially go this way when they see us reading classics. I had a similar reaction when I was reading Anna Karenina.

Hahaha it always sounds so narcissistic when I
call myself the Queen of TV, but I just want to point out that someone else gave me that title first. I didn’t just start calling myself that one day hahaha it actually caught on and only then did I use it too.
And right!?!?! I also want to know the differences. Sometimes (and that’s super rare) I end up liking the movie or whatever adaptation better, but I still want to know about the differences.
Yeah, something about classics apparently just screams “That person wants to SEEM like an intellectual. ”

Hahahahaha there are 24 hours in a day and people choose exactly the one little stolen hour I try to spend with a book! You wouldn’t see them looking so enthusiastic if I woke them up at 3AM for a conversation about why omelettes are terrible =p

My absolute pet peeve is when my parents didn’t use to let me bring a book whenever we go out because I needed to socialize and have “friends”. The pixies and fairies were not at all pleased with their bias.

People should stop guilt tripping bookworms!

My parents also do that, though now it’s easier for me to read anyway since I can do it on my phone. I think they actually gave up trying not to tell me to read too, they know at this point that it’s absolutely pointless.

This post is amazing as I have had almost every one of these situations happen to me recently I had number 5 happen to me and I was fuming. My grandma was driving me to work and for some reason, we were talking about books. I had mentioned wanting to go to a book signing that was happening near us (Which almost never happens and I have never been to one). I had said the only reason why I was apprehensive to go was that I wasn’t caught up in the series. She pats me on the knee and says “You have more to worry about than reading right now” Mind you I am currently going to college full time and my hours at work have been between 20 and 30 a week. I have taken this entire month off from blogging and I have only been reading my book for my English class. I was so upset after my classes that week I went to Barnes and Nobles and just sat there reading for a couple hours.

Aw, I’m sorry to hear that! 😦 It really hurts whenever people tell us what we should do instead of reading, especially when we try very much to reach our other goals and work hard. For me, reading is like a reward for everything else I do, it’s a way of spending my free time in a pleasant way after finishing my work. I hope you find some more understanding people! ❤

And then kindly shut up!!

And people just look at me weirdly when I say I love to read because I must be bored and have no social life right…ok maybe that’s TRUE but only I can say that about myself. It’s nice that all my IRL friends like books though (FILO LIFE) so I only get judged by people outside my bubble. They will never understand the pain of bookwormss.

I haaate being disturbed when I’m reading! And not necessarily linked to reading, but more to my blog is my mom with her neverending “Do you even make money doing that?” Like.. NOT EVERYTHING HAS TO BE LINKED TO MONEY. She seriously does not get that I just do this for fun, because I want to. It’s so frustrating..

Oh, and on the being disturbed while reading:
My boyfriend picked up a book two days ago or something for the.. first time since we’re together? I started asking him questions constantly, disturbing him whenever I had the stupidest excuse. He got mad.

Then he said: “Okay. This is exactly what I do every time you’re reading, isn’t it?”

I think I’ll be able to read in peace tonight. FINALLY.

I totally agree with you though, non readers just don’t understand. Also 10 books a year?! Really, I know a lot of people who’d be lucky if they read 5 books in a year, which to me seems super sad. And the whole ‘we’re trying to impress ppl thing’ yeah, we’re trying to impress our previous selves to show them we can read more books this time around. Honestly non readers have so much to learn, the film thing. I’ve had that happen so many times. It’s annoying.

And now I’m trying so hard to keep up and I felt so sad while not reading. I don’t get it.
