Happy Holidays!!! + The Cursed Books Awards

Hey, everyone! It’s that time of the year once again, I hope you’re having a great time and spend it with all your loved ones, eating good stuff and doing only what you love!! If you read all day, I totally support you!

Happy Holidays, I love you all!

And today – Christmas day – I’m hosting a bookish award, inspired by the Goodreads one. The idea came from the fact that I’ve only read one book out of the ones that won the Goodreads competition and that pushed me to create my own list. (Probably the best thing that happened with those awards is THUG winning in two categories and I say that as someone who haven’t read the book yet).

I tried to do something genre-wise, but I wasn’t able to, so I will just make a list of my most favourite books that I’ve read in 2017 and my least favourite books from 2017. Let’s begin!

Favourite Books of 2017

(in no particular order)

1. Six of Crows by Leigh Bardugo – I’ve read this book back in March and it was one of the best reads of this year because the characters are so amazing.

The cast is so diverse, the relationship between them are precious. I just can’t wait to finally read the sequel (I’m also putting it off because I don’t want to part with my bbys).

2. Salt to the Sea by Ruta Sepetys

hey, my name is Marta and I’m Sepetys trash. bye.

I just adore Ruta Sepetys’ books so much, they break my heart all the time and they make me cry and that’s very rare. I can’t press it enough how much I want all of you to read her books (now).

3. Vicious by V.E. Schwab

This book turned out to be everything I ever wanted in a book. I devoured it in a day or two because it was so easy to love. I love Victor, I love Sydney, I love everyone, I love how chocolate is worshipped in this book as it should be.

Also, I adore books about superheroes where the whole trope is twisted and turns out to be something else. Just lovely.

4. The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo by Taylor Jenkins Reid

I actually have a review for this book, check it out here :  (x)

I’m so glad I was able to discover Reid because her writing is everything, she created Evelyn Hugo, who is the bisexual goddess we all deserve.

5. The Wrath & the Dawn by Renee Ahdieh

review here (x)

2017 was the year I met my mom, Shahrzad Al-Khayzuran and it’s also the year I read almost all the books Ahdieh published. I still have one or something, please check out these books because they are amazing. You have no idea what you’re losing.

(pls read the book, i’m not kidding)

6. You’ll Miss Me When I’m Gone by Rachel Lynn Solomon  – review here (x)

This is actually a 2018 release, but you all are going to read it soon in January and know what I’m talking about. It’s definitely everything I’ve ever wanted in a book and whenever someone says YA lit sucks or doesn’t tackle important issue, I will give them this book.

Absolute favourite. It cleared my skin, fed my children, you know the rest.

Honorable mentions : East of Eden by John Steinbeck, Simon vs. the Homo Sapiens by Becky Albertalli and Foolish Hearts by Emma Mills (that I haven’t finished yet, but I’m 50% in and I know I will love it more than I can handle).

Least Favourite Books of 2017

(a.k.a the books that disappointed me too much)

263097921. The Hearts We Sold by Emily Lloyd-Jones

I was very bummed by this one because I wanted to read a book about pacts with demons and selling your heart to a demon and so on. I had huge expectations from this one and it didn’t happen.

Eh. I’m positive that one day I will find my favourite book that has demons and also a great pace and characters I’m interested in.

2. The Sun is Also a Star by Nicola Yoon – my review here (x)

Insta-love destroyed this book. I’m sorry. I so wanted to enjoy this one, but insta-love is something I can’t deal with, sadly.

I know this book is a popular one, so I hope you’ll be able to forgive me for this one, but I really disliked it.

223285463. Red Queen by Victoria Aveyard

I’m sorry, but why so many stereotypes???

I know I dislike a book when the character I love the most is the so-called villain.

I think I talked about my dislike of this book around here before, if you’re interested to know more, you can check my review on Goodreads : here (x).

22609310.jpg4. Confess by Colleen Hoover

I think 2017 was the year when I decided to say goodbye to Hoover. I might read some of her next books, at some point, because of my curiosity. But we’re mostly over. And this book is to blame. It was just too bad. Even guilty pleasures reads should have to make some sense. And this wasn’t the case here.

Definitely one of my most disliked books of the year.

I’ve heard so many bad things about The Fate of the Tearlings, the poor book. Is it really that bad?
YAAAAY, I’m so glad you liked Furyborn because I was accepted for it (from a wish) and now I’m really pumped to read it. Also, I have to read THUG now, I feel like I’m the only person who hasn’t read it yet and it’s baaad.

Oh what a great idea, I love it 🙂
It makes me so sad that you were disappointed by The Hearts We Sold – I love that cover and was very intrigued by the book, I’m sorry it didn’t meet your expectations… it makes me a bit nervous to read it now, haha 😛

Thaaank you!! ❤ Whenever you appreacite one of my ideas, I feel pretty accomplished. (because your ideas are always the best :P)
Hahaha, read it away! My most notable problem with it was the fact that it was unremarkable. I don't remember much of what happened and I think the idea was so good. Wasted potential, like I said. Hope you like it better than me, though! ❤
      Also, that cover is heaven!!!

        Aww you’re too sweet!! ❤ ❤
I understand – there are books we feel like we'll remember, and then… well, turns out they're not that memorable. It's a shame!

Riiight? Like that turn of the events had little to no sense to me. Besides making one love interest better than the other, of course. I hate when authors do this – present two options with a clear one that is so much better than the other. Like pls, I will always root for the underdogs.

I’ve spent the year only listening to good things about Six of Crows, I need to get my hands on it! But I’m not really interested in the Grisha trilogy, and I’m afraid I’ll miss important details 😦
I also wasn’t a big fan of the sun is also a star, red queen and confess – you’re not alone in there haha
    Happy Holidays! ❤

Vicious and Salt to the Sea? What an amazing list, Marty 😍
I adore Ruta Sepetys‘ books! Have you read Between Shades of Grey? It’s so good, but also so heartbreaking 😭

YEEEES, I have read it, I adore it. It’s one of my favourites (sadly, I’ve read it in 2016 and couldn’t include it here, the tragedy).
I can’t believe you like Sepetys too, I want to hug you so much right now!!! I haven’t read Out of the Easy though, have you?

I loooove Ruta Sepetys. I read Between Shades of Gray years ago and still think about it all the time, because it had such an impact on me 😳
And no, I haven’t read Out of the Easy but it’s definitely on my tbr!!! 😍

I definitely understand your struggle in six of crows!! I haven’t read it but I understand because I’ve read the first book of grisha series and a little bit of the second book but I loved Nikolai so much I stopped reading. Yeah so I definitely understand! Aaaaand I definitely love how we share the same dislike with the sun is also a star for the very same reason. I’m sorry Red Queen was a bum for you. Anyway, amazing list! Glad you had an amazing year for books!😊💖

*confession time* I’ve only read Shadow and Bone and I feel bad for not finishing the series because so many people say it’s better to finish it before reading SoC, buuuuut SoC is so much better. But I’ve heard so many positive things about Nikolai, I might have to give in and finish.
YAAAS, there’s nothing better than to bond over same disliked books, lol! Thank you very much, Ness!! ❤

I’ve heard the same things!!!! They made me afraid to read SoC LOL. Nonetheless, I want to finish grisha before reading SoC which would take a lot of time that I’d feel awful about LOL but with Nikolai’s book around the corner it surely would be sooner!! I understand why you didn’t finish grisha because I think you would hate it for the same reason you hated Red Queen tho I’m not so sure😅

I’ve read it in the hardcover format and it wasn’t much better for me. I’m sorry to hear that it’s not any better in audio. YESSS, definitely read Schwab!! ❤ She's a very talented writer and her books are so original and cool all the time.

Great list, a lot of your favorites are on my TBR, so now I’m pretty excited to get to them!! I’ve heard a lot of lukewarm opinions about Red Queen, so I am not even sure how it got popular??

    • thecursedbooks says:

Yes, yes, yes, go for them!! they are all so amazing! People have very different opinions on Red Queen, I’ve seen many people even say that they are aware of how bad the books are, but continued reading the series as a guilty pleasure.

Vicious is amazing when it comes to morality and it’s interesting to see the blurred lines between heroes and villains and how there might be no black and white, only gray. That’s my opinion on Red Queen too, it’s a huge cliche, sadly.
